KooKoo Bear Kids
Gets Tom Glavine’s Help For Donations To Children’s Cancer Research
Personal Connections Motivates The Promotion Of CureSearch
ATLANTA, GA – April 6,
2005 – KooKoo Bear Kids, Inc., an online and catalog marketer of upscale
children’s furniture and accessories, will donate the full proceeds from sales
of tee shirts and green wristbands that bear the logo of CureSearch, a charity
for childhood cancer research. Tom Glavine, a spokesperson for CureSearch, was
motivated to support childhood cancer research when the son of a friend was
diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. This child attends school with the children of
KooKoo Bear Kids’ president, Tara Mediate.
As a result, the families are teaming up to raise funds for this worthy
cause.
“The child-oriented focus of KooKoo Bear Kids’ Web site is a
natural fit for generating donations to help fund CureSearch,” said Tom
Glavine, spokesperson for CureSearch and pitcher for the New York Mets and
formerly for the Atlanta Braves. An
additional donation will be made to the charity from a percentage of profits
from clothing modeled by Tom Glavine and family in the latest KooKoo Bear Kids’
catalog.
“My father’s suffering, prior to his death of leukemia in
1997, made it important for me to do whatever I could to help, especially for
kids with cancer,” said Tara Mediate, president of KooKoo Bear Kids. “We are so grateful to work with the Glavine
family and support this great cause.”
Major League Baseball’s® (MLB®)
supports CureSearch through the Commissioner’s Initiative for Kids program, a
program for fan support of youth charities and to give children the opportunity
to attend MLB games. The partnership with MLB evolved through the
recommendations made by Tom Glavine, a player member of the Commissioner’s Initiative.
The feature items, promoting CureSearch, are in the spring
2005 catalog or online at KooKooBearKids.com.
According to CureSearch’s Web site, funding has helped improve the cure
rate for childhood cancer from almost zero to well over 75%. KooKoo Bear Kids is pleased to help raise
awareness that childhood cancer remains the number-one disease killer of
children in the US and provide funds for research and treatment.
CureSearch unites the National Childhood Cancer Foundation
(NCCF) and the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) in reaching for the day when
every child with cancer can be guaranteed a cure. CureSearch gets top rating from independent
charity evaluator, Charity Navigator, for excellent fiscal management that
directs more than 94 percent of total expenditures to funding cures for
children with cancer. Forty years ago,
childhood cancer was nearly incurable.
Today, children enjoy an overall cure rate of 78 percent. Research is the key to a cure, with more
targeted and less toxic treatments that reduce the long-term side effects and
improve quality of life for survivors.
